A Real Week In Football Episode III – Semi on! Europe Discovers Pirlo!

Mr Potato Head Vicente Del Boy decided to give a big “suck my chip” to me and the rest of his sleepy critics. Unmoved by the complaints over his zero striker policy he created a new role of false-player and handed it to a lucky competition winner from Seville (actually from Madrid but he works in Seville). F!ck knows what he does there as he is not a f*cking striker! You fat potato looking C#NT!!! Ahhh I feel a little better now.

Anyway Ronaldo bizarrely ordered his team to attack the Spaniards, and attack they did. They created multiple chances to win the match but sadly even Ron couldn’t put them away while stroking himself over his reflection in a camera lens. Del Boy was amiss over his tactics and cried “this is unfair they are devaluing our false football with attacking genuine football, I demand UEFA step in and stop this actual football madness!” (More …)

Episode XI: Every Single One Of Us Loves Alex Ferguson

Chudi of thebusbyway.com and myself of thebusbyboys.com discuss the 25th anniversary of Sir Alex Ferguson taking over at Manchester United, as well as preview the trip to Swansea on Saturday and the Champions League fixture versus Benfica on Tuesday. The usual blend of banter and insight.

The Community Shield Divides a Community

The Community Shield is usually nothing more than a ceremonial opening match to kick off the beginning of the new season. Had we beat City in the semi-final last year, or if Stoke had beaten City in the final, the game on Sunday would be nothing more than a glorified exhibition where the winner receives a silver plate. In our case, it would be yet another piece of silverware to stuff in the cabinet. If it happened to be against Stoke, I’d still want to win, but wouldn’t much care about the match just so long as every one of our players came out unscathed. Any other scenario where City isn’t involved is also fine by me. This year, however, the game is the same, but the stakes are just a bit higher.

After displaying the “35 Years” banner for years, we can no longer use that as a source of jeering against City fans. The banner and the drought came to an end last year in the FA Cup Final, a cup that I would’ve loved to win, if only to make sure City went yet another year winning absolutely nothing. Alas, this is not the case. And as it were, we are now playing them in a game that not only means there’s a potential for City to take away another piece of silverware, but a game where they can try to hold the victory over our heads heading into the season. I’d like to make sure this doesn’t happen.  But, not at all costs.

Manchester is Red, we all know that. Anyone who honestly tries to deny that is a delusional City fan. And we know they’re everywhere, like roaches. We’ve won the league 4 out of the last 5 years. We’ve been to the CL Final 3 times in the last 4 years, winning one of them. We just secured our 19th league title. City hasn’t won the league since 68. The only thing City can hold over our head is beating us in the FA Cup semi, eventually going on to win it. Years and years ago, the FA Cup was the piece of silverware to have. Now, it’s become more ceremonial than anything else. But when you don’t have anything to show for the last 35 years, you’ll take anything. So going into the Community Shield on Sunday, City has a whole lot more to play for other than just community bragging rights. We have a 19th league title to defend, so as much as I’d love to blank City 5-0, if we don’t win but keep all the players healthy, that’s okay by me. Let’s not roll over – and we won’t – but let’s keep our eyes on the real prize – a cup, not a plate.

With that said, I’d like to see us start our strongest 11, whoever Fergie thinks that is. With news that Carrick picked up a knock and Rafael (who is starting the testimonial) won’t play, I’ll just count them out. After thinking, and reconsidering, I’d say start De Gea in goal. We paid a handsome fee for him, and if he’s going to be the starter, throw him in there and see what he has in a game that means more than a friendly on a US tour. He needs the pressure, he needs the pitch time. Our back four should be Evra, Vidic, Rio and either Fabio or Jones. I wouldn’t mind seeing Jones back there. In MF, I’d like to see Nani, Park, Anderson, and Young. At some point, I’d like to see Valencia and Giggs on the pitch, (even Cleverley) but I’ll let Fergie decide when he wants that. Up front, I’d like to see Rooney and Berbatov. Forget that Berba hasn’t really played much for us, I think they are the best pairing sans Hernandez in the line-up. I’m not sure that Welbeck and Rooney can link up right in a game that could send a clear message to start the season. I wouldn’t mind Owen and Rooney, but feel like that could be hit or miss really. Our flanks and wingers will generate the most creativity and scoring opportunities, with Rooney probably dropping deep into the role that suited him so well in the second half of last season. With that 11 for at least 60 mins, I feel like we can beat City, regardless of who they put on the pitch.

What About Anderson? Why the ‘Brazilian Magician’ must act now to save his MUFC career.

‘We’re signing Sneijder! David Gill’s tieing things up in Milan today.’

‘Nasri is a done deal, personal terms agreed, Arsenal prepared to let him go for £25m.’

    Blah, blah, blah.

In the absence of genuine news since United did their summer business early my twitter feed has been populated with comments proclaiming the ‘definite’ signings of Samir and Wesley. On top of that has been even more suggestions of players we should be pursuing ranging from the sublime (proven international class performers like Lassana Diarra) to the ridiculous (Charlie Adam). All seem to be agreed on the need to recruit an additional central midfielder; a view I would tend to agree with given our richly promising youth players do not appear ready for the first team.

The element I have found surprising is the type of midfielder many fans have clamoured for. Personally I would favour an injection of steel rather than silk yet I am told we need a player who can bring adventure from central midfield. A player who can unlock defences. Someone who can link the midfield to attack like the Scholes of old. A player perhaps like this? “He is very young, very skilled in the pass, very intelligent and very fast.’ ‘ A player voted star of the Under-17 World Cup. A player we already have. (More …)

Fair points well made. Especially that we love him for the chant!

Injuries aside (and he’s had a few) he is lacking in consistency and drive. We can’t afford to be patient in waiting for the former and we may well be waiting forever for the latter. He just seems to be content with his lot, which is nice in ‘normal’ life but not on the pitch for the champions. I would absolutely love to see him come alive this season as Nasri did last year for Arsenal but somehow I just don’t see it. 4 years on that transfer fee with not much return is just too much. If we could get 10M for him I’d take it and put it towards Christian Eriksen; a similarly prodigious young player but one with his head srewed on.

Hahaha, this is simply ridiculous. What a dig at Anderson. He’s not my favourite player but he is a very good one. People forget that he’s only 22… How can we not bang on about his potential when it’s so evident? He will shine next season, believe me. The part that really pisses me off about this article is the part in which you say he has come back fatter than where he left off. This is not true, because FERGIE himself said ” Some players have come back looking different, like Anderson because he has worked on his upper body strength and weight. He wouldn’t be the same player without his build. If you watched the match two days ago, you would of seen that he did not stop running when we had the ball. His weight does not affect his speed or stamina… And by the way, thelast part of this article is just pathetic.

Alex Ferguson or ‘FERGIE’ as you prefer to call him on July 13th:

‘”Physically they are all fine, nowadays you don’t get players coming back like maybe 30-40 years ago with pot bellies, you don’t get that now, they are all well tuned and responsible adults now. You maybe get one or two who come back with a few pounds, I think naturally Anderson puts a few pounds on, just because of the make-up of his upper body but he’s now looking good and he’s training hard so it doesn’t take us long to get them into shape.”

I’m glad the boss isn’t concerned but he does state that Anderson has put on a few pounds so it hardly contradicts my point that I would have likeo see him return looking lean and ready to impress. I’m glad you enjoyed his performance against New England – let’s hope he can produce consistently. I also hope you are right that he will shine next season; I’ve not seen any evidence yet but I’d be delighted if Anderson does prove to be the player I hoped he would become.

for me his stuck, before he came to us he was an attacking midfielder and then he ended up as a playmaker but he often gets lost in games.

i wouldnt sell him but he needs to step up this season or risk being sold on, nani had his breakthrough season last season so lets hope this is andos year.

on new players after the last few summers by breath is not being held and i am sure fergie will work his magic no matter who does or doesnt sign.
but personally i would like a defensive midfield and a creative minded midfielder we have needed these additions since that night in rome and 2 years later our midfield again failed to perform.

you are the type of person that instill doubt upon our young players. Shut up, hes not played enough because of injuries.. you expect morrison to to replace him because uve heard alot about him and seen clips of him.. even if u watched every u18 game i still wouldnt trust ur judgement.. as for ando, age doesnt matter.. he only lacks two things in my opinion(which is more valuable than yours, judging by the lack of insight in ur article), a) fitness (which u hve pointed out) b) goal threat. both of which, at the age of 23, he can fix.. just chill the fuck out and stop posting stupid shit… instead maybe talk about how much faith fergie has in him , for inspite of losing 3 midfielders he doesnt buy anyone (sneijder=belive it when i see it on manutd.com). the pealp at utd dont make decisions based on ur stupid opnions but rather years (20 years of actually working at a club, not some bitter ex u8 sheffield reject) of experience… he has signed a new contract, and unless some bids a huge amount he is going to try to continue to displace carrick fletcher giggs in midfield.. hell need a couple of years(not everyone is a cristiano ronaldo).. and he has NOT flattered to deceive.. utd competetion is tough im so disgusted with people saying players flatter to decieve (nani and ando) shut the fuck up.. im 72 years old! im from manchest.. i have been to more than thousands of games at old trafford.. ive seen more transitions in football than u can fathom… i understand better what fergie has in mind than you, no doubt.. impateince is what drives u young folks to mis judgement.. its a shame u lot. and lets get it straight, unless fergie says it, 2012/2013 doesnt need to be the season of samba.. they dont look at things that way idiot. he has shown more than enough that he is utd quality.. why would he be sold at a loss when carrick will be retiring in a few years.. obertan will be sold before ando.. i agree that by the 100th apperance a player should be starting to make an impact… but dont tallk as if U KNOW that if ando doesnt samba the fuck out of 2012 that he will be sold, cause even fergie dont know that.. what” the soap opera style of his private life” are you referring to? there is non? prove it? c ron incident? what does that have to do with anything apart from u not experiencing such sexual expericiences.. ps u r a retard.

Paul…you may well have a valid point if you were able to get it across in a more eloquent manner. For a 72 year old man to be calling people retards is quite preposterous.

Football is about opinion, and your one is as valid as ours, but to make it personal…well thats the worst sort of fan in my opinion.

I think Anderson is fair game. His lack of consistency allows this. When he wears the shirt we shall sing his name and give him all the support he needs to succeed…but it doesnt stop us wondering if he will ever truly make the grade at MUFC. Have you ever stood in the pub before or after a game and debated whether which player will make it or not?? Im sure you have.

As you elude: “lacking in fitness and a goal threat”…for a player who is supposed to have an engine and attacking prowess (pre joining United)…well thats definitely an issue to discuss and crunch the numbers on.

My personal opinion is that if Anderson does not cut the mustard this season then he will be sold. This is the nature of the beast, and Fergie waits for no one. However, he needs the chance to shine or fail…and i think if he can stay out of Burger King and get a bit of luck with injuries, then hes got all the tools to be a top class midfielder for the team.

Thanks for reading, but no thanks to your vitriol.

Paul, first of all thank you for taking the time to read my article. Please allow me to make a few points in response:

The saddest thing about your reply is that deep in there are undoubtedly some valid points. Unfortunately they are so well hidden amongst a heady concoction of personal insults and barely readable boasts that it is easy to miss them. We all have different opinions and become legitimately passionate when sharing them. For a man of your years and experience to resort to baseless digs about my personal life and intelligence does not reflect well on you. Clearly you have never come into contact with young people with learning disabilities as I do in my job as a teacher or you wouldn’t even consider using the word ‘retard’.

In answer to your question (well the one I can decipher):
Q: ‘what” the soap opera style of his private life” are you referring to?’

A: The incident where whilst recovering from injury ‘allegedly’ he was involved in a high speed crash in a vehicle containing more passengers than was legal.

In all seriousness, if you really are 72 years of then congratulations on navigating your way through life despite so clearly lacking in social skills. I applaud you – especially for your full embrace of the text speak so beloved of the younger generation. u no wot i mean m8.

Ando has developed a pot-belly during the Summer-break and it’s so obvious. Four years is more than enough to establish yourself in the United’s team especially if you’ve got the potentials like Anderson. This season is probably his last chance to impress or be pushed aside by the likes of Morrison.

2012/13 needs to be a good season, but I am of the opinion we should focus on 2011/12 first. Am I wrong?

In all honesty, I think Ando is more Keane than Scholes. Actually, he has a bit of both in him, but more Keane in his combative play in the middle of the park. But, now is his time. He has to battle Carrick, Fletcher and Gibbo for a starting place.

Excellent read about a player who shows lots of potential, but as you rightly said, after 4 years at United he needs to be showing more than that.

I like Anderson, maybe for his enthusiasm and seemingly genuineness(?).

I’d really hope that he shows the consistency and fitness needed at this level. If not, he’ll have to make space for someone else, and I’d say it would be his loss rather than United’s.

I’ll have my fingers crossed he’ll come good, and follow Nani’s footsteps into becoming a very good player at the club.

Well done on a great post, and keep up the good work.
      Meanwhile, Anderson-son-son…

I agree with most of what you wrote mate, Ando isn’t investing his free time in improving his skills ..he should spend more time to improve his shooting accuracy and power… monitor his weight … off the field , a 6 month intensive English course would never see him need a translator! I wish he be better than Ronaldinho… but it seems Anderson is following him the other way!

I think Anderson, like Ronaldo and Nani before him, just needs to be handed the responsibility as the main man in United’s midfield. there is no question about it, Anderson should be an attacking midfielder/number ten type player. he plays too deep for my liking given his eye for a pass and dribbling skills.

he has been in the shadow of Scholes.. but given his depature, if we don’t sign a big name player this summer and Anderson can avoid any injuries.. I believe many will be surprised by his displays in 2011/2012.

Anderson could do the job,but i feel the way he has been introduced to the team may not allow him to express himself the way he used to while he was still in Porto,as a playmaker, but as a good player he could change if given the vote of confidence.

End of Season Awards: “19″ by @Luzhniki2008

Leaving Anfield in April 1992 after Manchester United had lost 2-0 to Liverpool, meaning Leeds had won the league whilst United had gone 25 years without a league title, I would never have predicted what would happen in the following 19 years. Season 2010-11 was another memorable one for Manchester United fans, with the club overtaking Liverpool to reach 19 league titles, to their 18 titles. In addition, the club reached another Champions League Final, which was to sadly end in defeat to Barcelona at Wembley. These are my awards for this great season: (More …)

Sanchez Coming? – But Will Nani Be Sir Alex’s Sacrificial Lamb?

So the gun has fired and Manchester United’s transfer business is well and truly out of the blocks…and like celebrity fan and fastest man on the planet Usain Bolt, United’s activity is racing ahead at gold medal pace with David Gill and a club delegation meeting yesterday with Udinese over the possible transfer of Chilean firecracker Alexis Sanchez.

With Phil Jones and Ashley Young as good as in the bag, the buzz around who United will nab next is like a bumble bee in your ear. It seems to change daily. One day Sanchez loves Man Utd. Next day he wants to stay in Italy. One day Wesley Sneijder is going to California to discuss with his WAG whether she fancies the hot and tropical weather of Manchester. The next day he’s staying at the San Siro. In many ways…..its all very very…………….dull.

But whether all this transfer jamboree turns you on or not it is almost impossible to not have your favourites for Sir Alex to sign, and with Twitter and the like..you are completely unable to avoid the voices of a million paid up members of The Faithful. All of this is totally cool. It’s just opinion. But the debate gets a bit more heated when you start to discuss who Sir Alex might well sell.

Nani has just had the best season of his career. With a good goal tally, and around 200 assists (or something bout that) he truly was the United player who carried the team in the early part of the season. He fed Berbatov like a dog begging for scraps from off the table…finally allowing the Bulgarian to revel in the adulation as the club’s top goalscorer. He made full back after full back look stupid as he would alternate in skinning them down the line, only to next time cut in on his left foot like a dart, and smashing one towards goal like an Exocet missile. He finally showed the promise that we had all been dying for him to show.

So why is he now thought of as a possible outgoing from the club?? (More …)

I confess to not having seen lots of Sanchez – although I suspect a few clamouring for his arrival are in a similar position. My thoughts are close to Rob’s on the issue of Fergie’s trust; the fact he did not envisage Nani as a certain starter despite his performance earlier in the season is revealing. As we found with Berbatov individual success does not necessarily equate to a greater team and this is where Nani appeared to (somewhat unfairly) fall out of favour. Hernandez playing on the shoulder requires rapid, direct service so he can anticipate the cross. Nani’s approach makes this difficult. It is an interesting quirk that Nani and Berbatov had an excellent understanding whereas the same could never be said of either player with Rooney or Hernandez. It would be a shame to see Nani go but if the manager does not envisage him as a central figure in our progress then it would be best to sell now whilst his stock is high. I certainly don’t feel Nani will feel any great loyalty to United – nor should he – so a lucrative move to Inter would interest him I’m sure.

It is a strange quirk though that if we were to spend £30m on Sanchez, and he achieved precisely the same level of goals and assists as Nani, we would be declaring him a success.

    • Kevin 18:28 on June 15, 2011 Permalink | Reply

      My two cents.
Nani is a certainty to go, and don’t be surprised if Berbatov does too. Ferguson seems to be nudging the team towards a more fluid shape, with multi-positional players and very few specialists – save Chicharito and he works his backside off harassing the opponent’s back four.
Phil Jones could be Hargreaves, he has the pace and tenacity. Plus he can play at right back or centre half.
It’s Welbeck or Berbatov for the 4th striker’s role.
We need an out and out left winger.
Nani is a coward – harsh word but you can kick him out of the game.
The missing piece is the Modric or even Nasri type who provides that flair or Giggs like ability to create a pass. True Scholes is gone, but Giggs was the artist last season.
Interesting times. Different team photo. Hopefully the same results, plus one more win when it counts.

@Kevin – Interesting theory, especially given the hard lesson taught by Barça. Whether it’s Barça or the Spanish national team, a “fluid shape, with multi-positional players and very few specialists” seems to beat down the English model.

        • Kevin 20:51 on June 17, 2011 Permalink

Barcelona seem to play “swarm” football. They never stop until they get the ball back if they lose it. Then they “rest” by passing the ball around, but always aware of the quick pass to strike at the heart of the opponent and picking up the pace and rhythm whenever they perceive the opportunity. Incredible, fantastic stuff.

    • Kevin 20:39 on June 17, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I think if they landed Sanchez he goes
But they still need a left sided player cos Sanchez is all right foot from what I’ve seen of him on video
Young plays there but he is a natural right footer though he has played wide left as we all know
it also remains to be see what kind of appetite for football Giggs has after all the off field activities, plus another year on the calendar
My guess is that we are not done yet and again as we know Fergie is more than capable of springing surprises

Defenders; The twins, Vidic, Ferdinand, Smalling, Jones, Evra, still a question mark for me about Evans but he does provide cover at left back
Midfield: Carrick, Fletcher, Anderson, Valencia, Young, Park, Giggs, (Sanchez/Schneider/Modric – one from that grouo)
Forwards: Rooney, Hernandez, Owen – Welbeck/Berbatov

I’d even go as far as suggesting that if Fergie can package Berbatov and Ferdinand in a deal for Modric he will do it.

      Ah the fun of speculation

I admit I’m a bit late in putting my awards selection together for two reasons I’m trying to extend the football season to suit myself and because I haven’t yet made up my mind who I will award each thing to! I’m hoping as I sit down to write this that it will all come together… here’s hoping! (More …)

Nice read as ever, clear and informative.I would nominate Wayne’s over head kick against City as the key goal for me and pivotal in turning round his season, in as much he could and did say bye his goal celebration ‘I am back’.
I am massively surprised and bewildered….No mention of ‘Ryan Giggs’ * shock horror * lol.
Thanks for the articles during the past season, have a brilliant summer and yes look forward to the 20th.

Thanks! I’d have Roo’s goal v City as my second purely because it seemed too obvious to choose! I don’t like obvious! Haha!

        Cheers for reading!

Fergie’s gift to the next United manager

If you turn on Sky Sports News between 7pm and 10pm you will see that they have thawed out Jim White from his cryogenic hibernation. This can only mean that silly season (otherwise know as the transfer window) is almost upon us. Whilst Jim uses his incredible talent of turning even the most insane of transfer rumour into a momentous news story, clubs are beavering away behind the scenes to improve their squads for next season. From a United point of view, this means that in the space of three months we will be linked with almost every footballer to lace on boots last season. Occasionally one of these rumours becomes reality (and I stress the occasionally), but more than likely Fergie springs a fast one on us all.

The summer of 2010 saw Fergie splash cash out on Chris Smalling, who was barely out of non league football, and Javier Hernandez, who at that point only Mexicans had heard of. Both players were young, but we needed established talent didn’t we? Where are the Mesut Ozil’s or the Wesley Sneijder’s? Where were the Karim Benzema’s or the Joe Cole’s? Fergie’s lost it! You don’t win anything with kids (I thank you Alan Hansen!)! If you know a group of United fans, I’m 100% positive you heard at least one of these shouts. But that wasn’t all, Fergie then shocked the footballing world by paying £7m for the littlest hobo a.k.a Bebe. Outrageous! Laughing Stock! Stitched up! (More …)

great blog you’re right about Ferguson’s new fieldlings

    • RedScot 16:43 on June 9, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Great read and fact as ever from this fantastic ‘United’ forum. The article of a few weeks ago discussing Manchester United’s youths and the comparison with other Premiership clubs like the sea change taking place at Liverpool, to rethink the financial investment in the fooball academy at Melwood. It makes total sense in the madness that has blown the sensible transfer fee structure out of the window since the Ronaldo fee was negotiated.Overnight there was a new ball park figure for alledged top players as witnessed at the Santiago Bernabeu for the signing of many a fans dream team player. What exactly has he achieved their?Zero in my opinion yet ranked in the top three of the worlds most costly players.
Sir Alex Ferguson took 7 years , with much grief and pain in between, to win his first English Premiership title with Manchester United and a mere 12 years to deliver the clubs second European cup.Rome, Moscow, Barcelona, London twice, are not built in a day,I dont care who the gaffer is.
In Sir Alex Ferguson I trust, if he says the current youth team are the best since the team of Beckham, Butt, Scholes,G.Neville, P,Neville and the effervescent Ryan Giggs, who are we to question the best most decorated of ever British Premiership managers.
Its a jig saw, United need only one or two fine adjustments, which will happen this summer to be able again to challenge on all fronts next season, with a huge amount of luck be able to take the club to its 2Oth Barclays premiership title and 4th Champions league final in 5 years.
Yes lose faith in what the manager plans, lose what it means to be United.

Why Has Sir Alex Looked Towards Ashley Young?

There is a certain amount of MUFC ‘fans’ worldwide who are only interested in the stellar signings that are on offer in world football. Any player that doesn’t fall into this category gets given the dubious tag of “Not United quality”….When Valencia came from Wigan you heard this catchphrase quite alot. Yet 24 months later he is a hero to those very same fans

The long-term MUFC supporter I think has a much more balanced view on squad acquisitions. As very nice as it would be to nab a Sanchez or a Sneijder we understand that there are cost implications to be considered…and that means that the very marquee player names are off our radar. We don’t do bidding wars and that’s why despite agreeing terms in principle for a player like Sanchez, that selling clubs will always encourage a Christies style auction attended by the billionaires of Russia and Arabia..and we will be gazumped!

Which leaves us with the wide canyon of excellent footballers who sit below this uber player status. Ones who can improve your squad, without destroying your wage structure. The ones who have the potential to sell alot of shirts (see how many Chicharito 14s now grace Old Trafford) rather than have the divine right to sell Beckham quantities. The sort of player that can give you a bit more of the killer edge without posing you with the Veron style problem of the pressure to perform little miracles.

Ashley Young is that type of player. (More …)

    • Chris 11:55 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Valencia was and is a better player than Young is and will be. Always defended the purchase of him but find it more difficult with Young. I would even say that £15M with one year left on his contract is an overprice. And its naive to think he will get double figures in both goals and assists every season.

A goal every 5 games for 5 years at Villa suggests he would at least get that at ours

    • ALFRED Mj 11:58 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Bull’s eye!you drove the point home and I agree with you 101%.the likes of Pogba n cleverly might influence The Gaffer to delay at least for one more year or two before buying a central midfielder.Ashley young certainly ticks all the boxes and he is a dead ball specialist which we currently don’t have.

    • Villan 12:00 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

If you can get him back playing as he did prior to the last two seasons then he will be a fantastic player for you but he has been slightly better than average the last two years. Maybe he has stagnated and tbf to him we have been poor virtually all season but as a Villa fan I would snap your hand off for £15m plus.

    • Sabien 12:08 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Fantastic article, i was one of those fans who craved like you said ‘stellar signings’, for me the trinity of players needed were de’gale, Sanchez or and Sneijder, to compete with Chelsea, Man City and Barcelona, i still think so but i do see your point about Ashley Young and the reality is we cannot afford both Sanchez and Sneijder , everything you said about Ashley Young is true but i don’t think Nani will still be part of the squad and will be sold, i don’t agree about midfield, Pogba is a defensive midfielder, Ravel Morrison is perhaps more fitting but we need a top quality attacking midfielder and Sneijder fits this mold, so Young and Sneijder, i can live with even if this means Man City gets Sanchez.

    • Sammy 12:08 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Please no for god sake. His attitude and mentality is not what is required of a united player and he is not better than what we have, therefore would not improve the squad. Its a better deal to either a) add another ten million and get some real quality ala sanchez or hazard. Both much better players in mentality and ability.
Or b) give cleverly and wellbeck a chance to make the breakthrough wide left.
      In Lord fergie we trust.

      • Tim 12:17 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Not sure what you mean by Hazard as having the right mentality. In Belgium he’s infamous for the exact opposite. He is known for being lazy and lacking commitment in training. Now, maybe he only appears to be that way and he really has the right mentality like his coach at Lille likes to claim. But he’s not included in the Belgium national team for that exact reason. His low work rate during matches and his attitude on training…
Yet he is still one of the hottest young prospects in Europe.

    • timbo 12:35 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Please. We don’t need a Fabregas? The midfield is in dire need of an overhaul, especially with Scholes showing signs of of Father Time finally catching up to him, and Giggs only good for every second game at this stage of his career. Fletcher and Carrick are not world class, merely workmanlike and efficient, so what’s left? Anderson? He is certainly starting to show signs of turning into the kind of footballer we had always hoped to see, especially now that Fergie has belatedly allowed him a freer role in attack, but we need greater consistency from the Brazilian if he is to establish himself as a first team regular. Cleverly, Pogba, etc have the potential to be something special, but potential is not what United need at the moment in the engine room. They need proven quality, the kind of players to match the world class talent bookending the midfield area. Not since the salad days of the Scholes/Keane partnership could United claim to have had an engine room to be feared – teams like Barcelona are so dominant in the area that United are invariably reduced to conceding the bulk of possession and trying to survive via quick counter attacks or forays down the wings, away from the midfield.

      • Simon 21:31 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

This is a preposterous comment. How is a midfield that is in “dire need of an overhaul” league champions and in the final of the champions league? Carrick has proven himself time and time again to be one of the best possession retention mdifielders in world football. Unfortunately some fans keep jumping on the ABU bandwagon and spouting the same nonsense about him not being good enough despite the fact he will have been in the starting XI for 3 champions league finals in 4 years. You don’t do that if you are “workmanlike and efficient”. Carrick deserves to considered as one of the best midfielders is United’s long illustrious history. We will sorely miss him when he has gone.

You cannot compare any team in the world to Barcelona when it comes to possesssion football. That is a team that has been forged over 20 years, with many of their players gorwing up together player the same triangles over and over again. Even Real Madrid, who have spent uber millions on so called “world class talent”, did exactly what you described and conceded possession to Barca.

You say United need “proven quality”, is not getting to 3 Champions League finals in 4 years enough proof of quality. How about 4 league titles in 5 years and runner up by 1 point in the other year? What more do you want?

        Ridiculous post.

Great article. It’s about time someone realised that Young is perfect for us. When he came on for England in the friendly a while back and stole the show, I knew he could really do a job at United. He is such a consistent player and would thrive among both Rooney and Hernandez up front. Even Berba if he stays and plays. Would be a great signing for a reasonable price.

      • Villan 13:37 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I’m sorry Jamie but you are so wrong about Ashley Young if you think he is consistant. I have been a season ticket holder at VP in all the time Young has been with us and he is far from consistant. He hasn’t even been our best player over the last two season.

Someone earlier posted he is a deadball specialist. It would be interesting to see the goals-to-set-piece taken ratio because he takes virtually every set-piece at Villa and his delivery has been far from excellent. He may score the odd free-kick and provide the odd ball for a goal.

As I stated earlier £15m+ for a player with one year left on his contract would be fantastic business for Villa.

      Don’t get him, he’s worthless

    • DBS Football 17:45 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Absolutely agree – very good article. I was at first worried about the link with Young, but after examination whole heartedly agree that Manchester United would be improved by that type of player. He is quick, able to get round defenders, deliver great crosses and can play on that left hand side.

It isn’t always about the big names and big money transfers, it’s about the collective team, and players who can work well with each-other, and like you say, I can see Young having a very good on field relationship with Rooney & Hernandez, much like Valencia enjoys.

Also agree about the central midfield part. Would love a big name to come in (I would love Modric) but I am also very, very excited by the prospect of Pogba and Cleverly as well as the other youngsters. The future is very, bright for Manchester United in my opinion. We have some fantastic young players who have a wonderful example to look up to in most of the current squad members.
      Cannot wait until next season.

    • Football-Rivalries 18:20 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I don’t think that it even comes down to whether or not Ashley Young is United quality, when you look across the current team. United have Nani and Valencia who fall into the same age category as Ashley Young and as we know Fergie likes to have 3 or 4 tiers of different ages for different positions. I do not think you will see Ashley Young in a Manchester United shirt next season.

    • Dekormster 20:18 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Nice to read a well thought out, accurate and interesting piece. Been a United fan for over 20 years..I agree with your point – Young at that price would suit the team well. He scores, has the room for improvement, is Prem League experienced and will only get better with the class of United squad. Thanks – good post!

    • Simon 21:23 on May 25, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I like this article a lot. It’s very balanced and rational. Many of us, myself included, need timely reminders of the value of being sensible in the transfer market. I have failed to get excited by the prospect of Ashley Young in a red shirt but when brought back to earth and seen it put in these terms, I realise that I have every reason to be. He certainly represents nothing like a gamble. He is premiership proven, brings dead ball quality (which we sorely lack) and is very reasonably priced.

A further virtue is his nationality. United have a terrific tradition of keeping a core of british players, something which I think has been vital to the cohesion of the squad and it’s subsequent success. A transfer fee of around 15M could be easily offset in part by the depature of some of the fringe players. Obertan and Gibson for example are much better players than many United fans give them credit for, however they are unlikely to have the quality to truly flourish at a club of this size.

The Valencia example is one which I think suits this situation perfectly. If anything Young has a better reputation than Valencia did at that stage. United have always been very shrewd operators in the transfer market have have perfected the art of squad building more than any other club side. Many of our players are unheralded by the mainstream media and indeed by our own fans but 1 through 25, the squad is just consistently quality. It’s a dynamic which has largely seen the idea of a first XI look antiquated.

    • Eddy 09:19 on May 26, 2011 Permalink | Reply

I must admit you have pulled me to your ship. You know I am obsessed with Sanchez and Sneijder and I always feel these two would greatly strengthen our squad. Now based on your analysis I seem to be convinced that may be we also need a replacement for Owen Hag to protect the defence. This would allow Rooney to roam behind Chico and infront of the defensive midfielder hence terrorizing the opposition at will. This would ultimately enable Chico to do what he does best – score goals from any where with any part of his body.

    • MUFCOK 20:29 on May 29, 2011 Permalink | Reply

Nice article mate. I agree that he will be a great signing. He can play on both wings and also as a supporting striker, has a decent goals + assists average, can take free kicks etc. As you say the Valencia signing was criticised by many United fans and now look at him, one of world’s best wingers. I still hope we sign a centre mid like Rodwell, a player with huge potential that we wouldn’t have to break the bank for.

What’s left in the tank? Is MUFC a timebomb waiting to go OFF?

Now I guess I’m a half full fan..the sort of fan that mixes all the joys of supporting Manchester United with all the fears that the common football fan possess as well. When will our time be up? When will we be ‘doing a Liverpool’?? It worries me…and that’s just because….IT DOES (and for no other reason)

So what’s there to worry about this season?

Top of the league. Progressing so far so good in Europe. Last 8 of the cup. Beaten only once in the league. Chelsea imploding. Liverpool as comical as ever. Does it get any BETTER?

Yet I cannot help but feel as a club we are sort of standing on the edge of a cliff….staring out into some kind of potential oblivion. This has nothing to do with the Glazers. And it has everything to do with how we’ve performed on the pitch. We are struggling away from Old Trafford like nothing I have seen for years. A trip to Wolves becomes a traumatic experience! And it is repeating itself. Over and over. (More …)

That pretty much sums up exactly how I feel — but it doesnt’ stop me worrying any the less. They say a trouble shared is a trouble halved, but in this case it’s a trouble doubled. I’m sure there are thousands upon thousands who feel the same. It’s scary who easily the whole season could just melt away overnight.

As you set Rob, we’ve been spoiled to high heaven over the last 20 years, something I’m certainly not complaining, however seasons like this one are just amazing in that we, the fans, feel our team is vulnerable and not invincible, therefore making it extremely exciting. When was the last time we truly felt beatable? We need our fans more than ever to get behind the team and sing our hearts out. Ensure that the team visibly hear belief cascading down the stands on to the pitch. This season has been the craziest unpredictable one ever and I just hope that our experience carries us home to the 19th title.
