TF Chronicles: From Old Trafford to Belfast

Today at TF Towers I’ve asked Kay to write for you all, she like us all is totally and utterly obsessed by those 11 men in United’s colours. I “met” her through twitter and have had the pure delight to meet her in person and be there with her as she took her first glances and then step inside Old Trafford. Here she tells us of her love for United and her first Manchester United match.

I’m just a baby when it comes to supporting Manchester United. Discovered I’d been sucked into the void that is football in 96′. I hadn’t meant to. In fact had fought against it. Was on in the background as my Man Utd loving husband and his mates watched all the matches at ours. But it got under my skin. Hooked. (More …)

TF Chronicles: Since when has it become acceptable to sing about Munich?

6th February 1958. A defining moment in the history of Manchester United, one that would shape the future of the club forever. Talking to older relatives, it was clear that no matter which team you supported or where you lived, the grief that followed the disaster was felt all over the country. United became the team that everyone was rooting for, seeing how they bravely came through such adversity to reach the 1958 FA Cup Final. It was at that very match some say, that a touch of resentment started to surface about United’s new found popularity with fans of other teams. Bolton Wanderers won the final 2-0, but the whole country was behind United. Some Bolton fans felt that it took away some of the shine to their victory, and perhaps they weren’t given enough credit for their triumph. Certainly Bolton fans in the modern day dislike United intensely, but how much of that is deep rooted from 1958 and how much of it is just the overriding dislike that so many fans seem to have for us, we will probably never know. This piece reflects my sentiments exactly

Ive never been an eye for an eye sort of fan when ive been on the terraces. Because it disgusts me when I hear morons calling us Munichs and signing their disgraceful songs, I go the opposite way when it comes to retort. I wont sing about Hillsborough. Not ever. I was stood in a football ground as a child the day it happened. They announced at half time of the match over the tannoy what had happened and that will live with me forever, even though i was a kid. Yes I will sing other songs about opponents that are close to the bone (so to speak) but i dont want anything to do with singing songs about people who died because they liked supporting their football clubs.
