  United win, but suffer title heart break; Sunderland 0 Manchester United 1 

  

  United went into the final day of the season knowing that even a result against Sunderland was unlikely to see them retain their premier league title, with leaders Manchester City needing only to beat QPR at home to win their first in over 40 years. In some ways, this made United’s job simple, beat Sunderland and hope that things elsewhere fell into place to secure a remarkable 20^th league title. Having won the title on the final day 3 previous times, Fergie went for experience in the form of a Carrick Scholes and Giggs trio in midfield, as United opted for their somewhat unflavoured 4-5-1 formation against a Sunderland side newly transformed by Martin O Neil.   United win but ultimately lose title; Manchester United 2 Swansea City 0 

  

  Following news that City had all but clinched the title with their victory at Newcastle, United faced the difficult challenge of seeing off Swansea City at Old Trafford, knowing that only a heavy victory would see them regain the initiative in the title race. Fergie’s decision to change formation in the game against City the following week raised many eyebrows, and the boss responded in kind with a more familiar United side, with Ashley Young, Javier Hernandez and Antonio Valencia all returning to the side.   United surrender title lead; Manchester City 1 Manchester United 0 

  

  With the destination of the premier league trophy hanging in the balance, United faced their toughest test of the season with a trip to the Etihad stadium to play Manchester City, in what looked to be an effective title decider. Having endured the indignity of suffering a 6-1 reverse defeat earlier in the season, United were looking to respond and in turn seal a 20^th league title on their neighbours back yard. With a draw also likely to prove enough for United, Fergie reflected this in his team selection, handing Park his first start since January, and re introducing Ryan Giggs to a 5 man midfield, with the intention of stifling City’s midfield trio of Yaya Toure, David Silva and Gareth Barry.   United stutter to throw title race back open; Wigan Athletic 1 Manchester United 0 

  

  United continued their hunt for a 20^th league title with a trip to nearby Wigan, as the reds looked to maintain their 8 point lead at the top of the premier league. With Wigan struggling near the foot of the table, and United having beaten the Latics in every meeting since their promotion, the omens were good for another positive step in the direction of the title. Roberto Martinez’s side however were enjoying a good run of form, having recently seen off Liverpool at Anfield, and being unfortunate to not come away with points at Stamford Bridge last weekend, creating the sense that an upset could be in the offing.   United continue title surge; Manchester United 2 QPR 0 

  

  With the title race hotting up, United welcomed Queens Park Rangers to Old Trafford on a day which promised to have huge ramifications upon the final destination of the title. Having enjoyed a superb run of form, and boosted by the easy victory recorded over the West London side in December, United were confident of building an 8 point lead at the top of the table before Manchester City faced Arsenal.   United strengthen grip on title; Blackburn Rovers 0 Manchester United 2 

  

  Having watched their biggest challengers to the title, Manchester City, slip to a 3-3 draw at home to Sunderland, United travelled to Blackburn Rovers knowing that victory would put them 5 points clear at the top, and give them a huge advantage in pursuit of league title number 20. After last week’s cagey, and somewhat fortuitous 1-0 victory over Fulham, United knew that a much improved performance would be required to win a fixture the reds had only managed to win twice in 11 outings.  Having also succumbed to their Lancashire rivals earlier in the season at old Trafford, a very respectful United side lined up, with Ferguson opting to stifle the midfield with Phil Jones, Paul Scholes and Michael Carrick  forcing Wayne Rooney onto the left of a 3 man attack.   United stumble to victory; Manchester United 1 Fulham 0 

  

  After a weeks break following the demolition of Wolverhampton Wanderers , United welcomed Fulham to Old Trafford with the reds looking to leapfrog Manchester City to the top of the table and go 3 points clear. Having beaten the West London side 5-0 in the reverse fixture earlier in the season, and with the visitors only having won twice away from home this term, there was a confidence around Old Trafford that United would secure a vital 3 points.   United outclassed again; Athletic Club 2 Manchester United 1 (United lose 5-3 on aggregate) 

  

  United looked to keep their European hopes alive with the return leg of their Europa league tie against Spanish side Athletic club. Having gone down 3-2 at Old Trafford the week prior, United had to win by 2 clear goals if they were to guarantee safe passage to the quarter finals, a difficult feat against a very impressive Athletic side. With a crunch game in the premier league v Wolves on Sunday, there was a hint of expectation that key players would be rested with that in mind, however, a very strong United side including Rio Ferdinand, Wayne Rooney and Patrice Evra hinted Fergie believed the game was there for the winning.   Reeling from their disastrous 3-2 home defeat to Athletic Bilbao on Thursday night, United looked to get back to winning ways with the visit of West Bromwich Albion to Old Trafford, and continue their assault on the Premier League title. With the baggies in good form however, on the back of 3 successive wins, United would have to be back to their best in order to secure 3 precious points, and keep the pressure on Manchester City who travelled to Swansea. Fergie opted for 4 changes from the side who succumbed to Athletic, as Ferdinand, Scholes, Welbeck and Carrick all returned to bolster the side. (More …)

  United send out title message; Tottenham Hotspur 1 Manchester United 3 

  

  Having once again seen league leaders Manchester City record a comfortable home win, the reds travelled to White Hart Lane to face Tottenham, and the daunting prospect of a 5 point deficit to make up against a Spurs side sitting 3^rd in the table. United came into the game off the back of a dramatic late salvo courtesy of Ryan Giggs at Norwich, whilst Spurs were still reeling following their 5-2 hiding at the hands of Arsenal, seemingly giving the reds the edge in what was likely to be a closely fought game. Injury blows to Gareth Bale and Rafael Van der Vaart, and the absence of Scott Parker through suspension gave United further encouragement to get the result which would strike a huge blow in the title race.
